Vestito in abiti professori e cappello a tre ghiande, lo studioso legale Bartolomeo Bonghi è mostrato in possesso di un libro sulla legge civile romana dedicatogli dal suo autore nel 1553. Attraverso la finestra aperta è una torre che è stata una delle città più identificabili di Bergamo. Moroni fu ammirato in tutta l'Italia settentrionale per la sua capacità di catturare i suoi sitter "dalla vita", o "dalla natura", nelle parole dell'artista veneziano Tiziano. Lavori come questo sono stati indubbiamente studiati dal giovane Caravaggio.
