Il sitter, Ludovico Terzi, era un preponderante ecclesiastico di Bergamo. La famiglia Terzi proveniva dallo Sforzatica, vicino a Bergamo. Dopo aver studiato diritto (probabilmente a Padova dal 1537 al 1540) Ludovico fu nominato protonottario apostolico in una data sconosciuta, e fu registrato come canone della cattedrale di Bergamo dal 1539 al 1582. Probabilmente morì nel 1583. È identificato dalla lettera che tiene nella mano sinistra. Questo dipinto sembrerebbe mostrare un uomo a metà degli anni '40 e di conseguenza è stato datato nei primi 1560. Era insolito per Moroni
