In questo dipinto, Giotto illustra magnificamente la sua capacità di combinare aspetti dell'iconografia tradizionale con il realismo impeccabile per il quale era così famoso. Giotto mostra il suo talento avvolgendo i vestiti leggermente sopra il Gesù crocifisso, il cui loincloth si siede leggermente sul suo corpo, e si avvolge sulle gambe mentre il suo corpo affonda sulla croce.
