Una delle sue prime opere, questo dipinto raffigura uno dei temi preferiti di Murillo, la Vergine e il Bambino. La vergine si siede in un vestito rosso vibrante su uno scialle blu profondo, tenendo il bambino non coperto, che sta sul suo giro. Le due figure si tengono in un tenero abbraccio, come solo una madre e un bambino possono fare, che è un elemento tipico dei dipinti di Murillo. Questo tocco tenero è indicativo di un elemento realistico che è presente in tutti i dipinti di Murillo, quasi come un'istantanea delle due figure prima che fossero completamente posti, come se in una fotografia candida.
