Il dipinto era precedentemente in una cappella nella chiesa di Sant'Apollinare, Venezia. Dopo la soppressione della chiesa, la foto è stata scattata in Francia e tagliata in due. Entrambi i pezzi sono stati acquistati dalla famiglia Chiesa per la Brera, il dipinto è stato restaurato nella sua forma originale nel 1950. In questo grande dipinto, Tiepolo affrontò lo stile di Piazzetta, e allo stesso tempo tornò agli elementi dei grandi modelli veneziani del Cinquecento, come il Pala di San Zaccaria del Veronese.
