Castiglione assorbiva voracemente una serie di precedenti -Van Dyck, Rubens e Rembrandt, tra gli altri - per stabilire tecniche uniche e radicali sia di disegno che di pittura. Brevi pennellate diagonali ripetute costruiscono l'abbigliamento, e l'impasto ricco dà una fisicità tattile alla vita continua del cranio e del libro aperto. San Francesco (1181/82-1226) è raffigurato su un precipizio roccioso, sagomato contro il cielo serale in un momento drammatico di devozione ad una scultura raffigurante la crocifissione di Cristo. Al contrario, il cranio e il libro simboleggiano la mortalità e le vanità del mondo.
