Un disegnatore di grande talento e prolifico, Guercino trascorse la sua carriera quasi esclusivamente in Emilia. Questo disegno è unico nella sua oeuvre per il suo alto grado di finitura e l'uso di più gesso colorato, lavare, e pastello blu, che indicano che era probabilmente destinato per la vendita o la presentazione a un patrono o un amico. Le analogie stilistiche con gli affreschi dell’artista nella cupola della cattedrale di Piacenza suggeriscono che questa esposizione di bozze virtuose probabilmente risale anche al 1620.
