Già attribuito al più famoso Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, questo dipinto è ora riconosciuto come opera del fratello Giuseppe. Fu donata alla chiesa di San Sepolcro dal Cardinale Alfonso Litta, Arcivescovo di Milano dal 1652 al 1679, prima di entrare nella Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. La Madonna, con il Bambino in grembo, si distingue in primo piano, in parte attraverso l'uso di colori brillanti, mentre l'invecchiamento di San Giuseppe, in tonalità più morbide, contempla in modo pensieroso la scena da dietro.
