Questa scena animata mostra un gatto catturato nell'atto di divorare un polpo. Il dipinto, risalente all'alto punto della carriera di Recco, mostra l'eccezionale capacità del pittore di descrivere una gamma abbagliante di superfici e materiali, da squame di pesce iridescenti, molluschi snelle e altri crostacei, a rame martellato. Recco, che dipinse l'alga nelle lettere delle sue iniziali (G R), era certamente consapevole delle nature morte fiamminghe e spagnole, che erano popolari e molto ammirate a Napoli nel XVII secolo.
