Nato a San Pietroburgo alla nobile famiglia principesca Rurikid Grigory Gagarin è stato un pittore russo, maggiore generale e diplomatico. Un amico di Alexander Pushkin e Mikhail Lermontov, Nel 1848-1855 Gagarin visse a Tiflis servito sotto Mikhail Vorontsov. Tra i doveri militari e amministrativi, Gagarin fece molte opere per la città. Costruì un teatro, affrescò la Cattedrale di Tbilisi Sioni, restaurando affreschi delle antiche cattedrali georgiane, tra cui il monastero di Betania. Nei suoi registri ‘Il viaggio a Caucaso’ uno scrittore francese Alexander Duma (il padre) scrive: Non ho mai visto un palazzo del teatro così delizioso. Con il suo vestibolo, l'interno, la tenda del teatro e i dipinti a parete mi ricorda la costruzione del teatro Pompeo. Il Palazzo d’Arte della Georgia possiede una preziosa collezione di “Sketches and Drawings of Caucasian People” di Gagarin
