Gu Yun è nato a Suzhou ma ha trascorso i suoi anni artistici maturi nella vivace comunità artistica di Shanghai del tardo XIX secolo. Anche se alcuni pittori di Shanghai all'epoca stavano sperimentando stili audaci e sciolti, Gu produsse molte opere che erano relativamente restrittive e conservatrici.
