1755 erteilte König Friedrich II. von Preußen (1712-1786) den Auftrag für die Statue des Mars zunächst an Lambert Sigisbert Adam (1700-1761). Die Skulptur blieb jedoch durch dessen Tod am 13. Mai 1759 unvollendet. Den Auftrag erhielt nun Guillaume Coustou d. J. (1716-1777), der für die angefangene Arbeit 1200 Francs an die Erben von Adam zuhlen hatte. Die Statue des Mars gelangte mit den drei anderen für die Bildergalerie (Diana, Apollo und Venus) erst 1771 nach Potsdam und wurde 1773 von Matthias Oesterreich (1716-1778) erstmals beschrieben. Die Skulpturen sind Teil eines ikonografischen Programmi, das die gesamte Bildergalerie erfasst. Kunstausübung als Weg der Erkenntnis, die Kunstfertigkeit, der Paragone (Wettbewerb) von Malerei und Skulptur, von Antike und Gegenwart, von italienischer und niederländischer Malerei bilden ein reiches Feld der Kunstbetrachtung. Die Darstellung des Mars, der neben den ruhenden Waffen steht, zeigt, dass die Künste nur im Frieden gedeihen können. (Saskia Hüneke)
