Gustav Grunewald è probabilmente l'artista più famoso della regione Lehigh Valley. Nato il 10 dicembre 1805 nella Colonia moravo Herrnhuter a Gnadau, in Germania, Grunewald fu addestrato all'Accademia d'Arte di Dresda dall'acclamato artista paesaggista Caspar David Friedrich. Dopo un periodo nell'esercito prussiano e ulteriori studi artistici, si sposò nel luglio del 1831 e si trasferì a Betlemme, Pennsylvania nel novembre. Fu inizialmente respinto come membro della comunità morava di Betlemme, e si trasferì tra Betlemme e Filadelfia fino a quando fu finalmente accettato nel marzo del 1834. Nel 1836, Grunewald fu nominato maestro di disegno al seminario moravo per le giovani signore, che divenne quello che è ora Università moravo, e tenne la sua prima classe nella pittura ad olio nel 1844. Nel 1849, Grunewald acquistò molto all'angolo tra Goepp e Main Streets a Betlemme e costruì la sua casa da terra.
