Grunewald si iscrisse all'Accademia delle Arti di Dresda nel 1820 per studiare la pittura del paesaggio e rimase per tre anni. Dresda Arts Academy è stata fondata nel 1764. Succede alla Scuola di Disegno e Pittura fondata nel 1680, una delle più antiche accademie d'arte dei territori di lingua tedesca. Gli edifici furono gravemente danneggiati durante il bombardamento di Dresda del 1945. Nel 1950, dopo il restauro, l'Accademia delle Arti di Dresda si fuse con l'Accademia Pubblica d'Arte Applicata; è ancora una scuola d'arte preminente in Germania. Tra i famosi ex insegnanti ci sono Caspar David Friedrich, Otto Dix e Oscar Kokoschka, tra cui Georg Grosz, Kurt Schwitters e Gerhard Richter. Quando Grunewald studiò con Casper David Friedrich, Friedrich era stato istruttore a Dresda per diversi anni ed era al culmine dei suoi poteri come artista. Grunewald ha assorbito lo stile soggettivo di Friedrich e la sua attenzione ai dettagli accurati, così come il suo apprezzamento romantico per la bellezza della natura nella sua forma pura e cruda.
