Matisse ha dipinto due versioni di questo dipinto, questo con linee più nitide e colori più brillanti della prima versione. Anche se il titolo è “The Young Sailor”, il modello per la pittura era in realtà un pescatore di 18 anni chiamato Germain Augustin Barthelemy Montarges. Il pezzo è stato dipinto nella casa di Matisse a Coillioure, durante quella che doveva essere conosciuta come la sua fauvre estate, durante la quale aveva dipinto autoritratti quando ha convinto il giovane pescatore a posare per lui. Il dipinto è ora appeso al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York, dove è uno dei più apprezzati del dipinto nel museo.
