Rifiutando la convenzione di mostrare una figura femminile idealizzata e statuaria basata su modelli classici, in questo lavoro Courbet ha lasciato cadere le trappole di un'allegoria accademica o, in effetti, di un'immagine con un pretesto di alta mente. La sua immagine di una donna che abbraccia una cascata d'acqua potrebbe essere stata una risposta ad un'opera di Ingres esposta a Parigi l'anno precedente, che raffigura un nudo iper-idealizzato che tiene un vaso da cui l'acqua versa come un'allusione alla primavera o una fonte di fiume.
