Questa è la prima rappresentazione di Courbet di una donna impegnata in un atto di auto-relazione. Nel 1860, quando espone questo dipinto e due paesaggi a Bruxelles, il critico Théophile Thoré scrisse: "I toni della carne sono di rara sottigliezza e richiamano l'opera dei più grandi coloristi, anche [artista rinascimentale italiano] Correggio. Si può scoprire che lo stile di M. Courbet è volgare, che cerca stranezza nella sua scelta di soggetti, e qualsiasi cosa ti piaccia, ma certamente è un professionista di prima classe e un colorista molto sorprendente. Donna con Specchio sta avendo un effetto profondo sul gruppo di giovani artisti a Bruxelles che sono interessati a nuovi sviluppi di ogni genere."
