Questa interpretazione oversize del personaggio per "virtue" (toku 徳) riflette l'energia spirituale esuberante proiettata da Ekaku, che era uno dei principali sostenitori del risveglio della setta Rinzai del Buddhismo Zen nel tardo Edo-periodo Giappone. Originariamente composta dallo storico cinese e dallo studioso confuciano Sima Guang (1018-1086), l'iscrizione legge: Se accumulate denaro per i vostri figli e nipoti, non saranno in grado di tenerlo. Se accumulate libri per i vostri figli e nipoti, non leggeranno nessuno di loro. No, la cosa migliore da fare è accumulare tranquillamente la virtù, nel regno spirituale.
