Uno dei due sommergibili mercantili tedeschi, Deutschland arrivò per la prima volta negli Stati Uniti a Baltimora il 9 luglio 1916. Dopo aver attraversato l'Atlantico praticamente vuoto, alcune delle sue zavorra di ferro sono state utilizzate per creare medaglie commemorative, come questa.
