Hans Maler lavorò come ritrattista nella città mineraria di Schwaz, a est di Innsbruck. Le opere d'argento di Schwaz appartenevano ai più prosperi d'Europa, e Sebastian Andorfer, che è mostrato in questo ritratto a quarantotto anni, era uno dei suoi principali funzionari.
