“Il grande Kaiser Maximilian” come Holbein in seguito scrisse sullo sketch – probabilmente come osservato durante un giro per le strade di Augusta. Il draughtsman stava guardando da una posizione un po' elevata, forse da una finestra nella sua casa; è toccante vedere un tale autentico, perché completamente imprevedibile, l'istantanea dell'imperatore tanto conosciuto dell'età di Dürer. Anche se Maximilian aveva certamente un senso per la pomp e ha preso la dignità della sua famiglia molto sul serio, ha anche spesso goduto di apparire sotto un aspetto più modesto.
