Il gatto simboleggiava la longevità in generale. Questo è perché il carattere cinese per un gatto (animazione) e quello di 'vecchio' (耄) sono entrambi pronunciati 'mao'. Nel frattempo un gatto disegnato con iris lungo e stretto indicherà che è mezzogiorno nella foto, il momento più luminoso della giornata. Aggiungere alcuni peonie alti e lunghi nella scena per mostrare fiori in piena fioritura e il dipinto sarebbe interpretato come simbolo di ricchezza e prosperità in piena fioritura solo quelle peonie. He Yu, che è nato a Shanghai, è stato attivo durante la tarda Era Qing ai primi giorni della Repubblica di Cina. Fu anche esperto nel disegno di uccelli e fiori.
