La prima linea della metropolitana è stata aperta a Parigi in occasione della Fiera Mondiale di Parigi nel 1900. Hector Guimard ha progettato le prime stazioni della metropolitana, utilizzando il linguaggio formale di Art Nouveau. Ha utilizzato materiali industriali come ferro e vetro per creare strutture filigrane e trasparenti che ricordano germogli, steli e foglie. Le griglie in ghisa, che si trovavano in quasi tutti gli ingressi della stazione, sono decorate con uno scudo progettato vegetale.
