Una giovane donna che indossa un vestito rosso elegante è seduta in primo piano girata verso sinistra e guardando mezza sorridente allo spettatore. È uno dei rari casi in cui Vermeer anima una delle sue figure con una sembianza di espressione. Sembra essere corteggiata da un bravo gentiluomo, piegata e incoraggiante la giovane signora a prendere un sorso dal bicchiere di vino che tiene in mano.
