Während des Ersten Weltkriegs guerra Heinrich Vogeler, Jungestilmaler und Gründer des Worpsweder Barkenhoffs, als Nachrichtenoffizier an der Ostfront stationiert. Im agosto 1915 gelangte er während seines Einsatzes auch nach Dolina, einem Ort in den Vorkarpaten, der heute zum westlichen Teil der Ukraine gehört und fertigte einige farbige Detailstudien der galizischen Bevölkerung an. In dem Mappenwerk „Aus dem Osten“ veröffentlichte Vogeler seine Eindrücke beits 1916.
