Schjerfbeck intitolò questo dipinto dopo lo scialle nero indossato da Sigrid Nyberg, suo amico e padrona di casa in una città sulla costa finlandese. Come l'artista ha lavorato, ha trasformato lo scialle e il torso in forme astratte e passaggi di colore. I colpi a bullone e gli strati sottili di vernice creano una superficie variegata e strutturata. Il volto di Nyberg è stilizzato, con occhi drammatici, labbra e capelli slanciati che evocano la donna moderna degli anni venti. Schjerfbeck ha descritto l'immagine come trasmettere sia bellezza che "dolore interiore e vuoto". Lo stile dell'artista le ha guadagnato la reputazione di "Finland's Edvard Munch". Questa è la sua prima opera acquisita da un museo negli Stati Uniti.
