William Tom Warrener, pittore inglese e amico di Lautrec, appare come un gentiluomo di alto respiro che chiacchiera due compagni femminili al Moulin Rouge, la sala da ballo che ha epitomizzato la vita notturna colorata e dolorosa di Parigi fin-de-siècle. Gli atteggiamenti suggestivi delle donne – e l’orecchio di Warrener, arrossati in imbarazzo – indicano la natura risqué della loro conversazione. Questo dipinto servì come studio preparatorio per una litografia a colori del 1892.
