Cinque sono seduti : paul verlaine e arthur rimbaud , léon valade , Ernest d'Hervilly e camille pelletan . Sono tutti vestiti di nero tranne uno , camille pelletan , chi non è un poeta come gli altri ma un politico . il posto centrale è occupato da emile blémont , che acquistò il dipinto e lo diede al louvre 1910 . Mancano almeno due cifre : charles baudelaire , a chi inizialmente il dipinto doveva essere un omaggio , che morì in 1867 e albert mérat che non voleva essere dipinto in compagnia dei diabolici poeti verlaine e rimbaud e che si credeva fosse sostituito da un mazzo di fiori .
