Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) è stato un pittore ingenuo. Conosciuto per le sue raffigurazioni della giungla, ha anche creato alcuni dipinti marini. Il soggetto si riferiva ad un panorama di Théophile Poilpot, completato per la Compagnie Transatlantique durante l’Esposizione Universale del 1889, o all’incrociatore D’Encastreux, lanciato in mare nel 1896. Le onde ruvide sovrappongono un arredamento teatrale, senza effetto di profondità. I toni blu, bianco e rosso della barca francese contrastano armoniosamente con i vari grigi nel cielo e nel mare. Come gli impressionisti, a cui ha esposto, Rousseau era interessato al paesaggio. Tuttavia, contrariamente a loro, cercò di descrivere ciò che vide realisticamente. Senza formazione, né qualsiasi cultura artistica o scientifica, produsse bizzarri pezzi di proporzioni scomode. Durante tutta la sua vita, Rousseau fu ingannato dai critici.
