Durante tutta la sua carriera, Harpignies mantenne stretti legami con artisti e amici nella sua città natale di Valenciennes. Aveva anche uno studio a Parigi e nel 1883 firmò un contratto con lo studio parigino di Arnold e Tripp che lo liberarono dalla gestione e dalla vendita del suo lavoro. L’attuale dipinto, ispirato da un brano della poesia di Victor Hugo, fu commissionato dai commercianti dell’artista, che presentarono la tela al Museo nel 1886. Harpignies ha trattato il tema romantico con caratteristica direttività, in uno stile influenzato dai pittori Barbizon.
