Nato a Filadelfia, Benbridge studiò a Londra e a Roma sotto Anton Raphael Mengs e Pompeo Batoni. Nel 1772, l'artista si stabilì a Charleston, dove divenne il ritrattista alla moda della città dopo la morte di Jeremiah Theus nel 1774. Questa miniatura mostra lo stile di ritratto colorato, lineare e croccantemente realistico di Benbridge, che è notevolmente simile a quello di John Singleton Copley. A partire dal 1770 circa, è uno dei primi sforzi dell'artista nel mezzo, ma mostra più raffinatezza di un certo numero delle sue opere successive. Il caso, che è impostato con ametiste che corrispondono alla cintura di lavanda del signore, è originale al pezzo.
