Nato a Utica, New York, Inman iniziò a studiare arte da bambino. Anche se era un pittore prolifico ritratto, è anche accreditato come il primo artista americano ad aver tentato con successo la pittura di genere. "The Young Fisherman" è il suo primo importante dipinto di genere, ed è stato fatto per servire come base per un'incisione. Affidandosi in una certa misura alle immagini romanticizzate francesi di contadini, Inman si concentra sull'innocenza dell'infanzia come il ragazzo sano accarezza un insetto per esca. La gioventù e la promessa del ragazzo sono riecheggiati dal paesaggio lussureggiante vergine sullo sfondo.
