Janet Halleck Drake era la figlia del poeta newyorkese Joseph Rodman Drake e ha chiamato per l'amico del padre, il poeta Fritz Greene Halleck. Aveva circa sette anni quando si sedeva per Inman, che l'ha messa in un ambiente boscoso fantasioso. Il cappello superiore di Miss Drake è un po 'emblematico dell'artista, che era noto per indossare uno sulla città. Inman espose il ritratto a New York nel 1825 e un recensore lo trovò “bello. ”
