Come molti dei suoi contemporanei artistici nella California del XX secolo, Percy Gray venerava la natura, e la maggior parte dei suoi dipinti manifestano il suo desiderio di preservare la bellezza naturale dello stato. Questo dipinto è insolito per l'artista, in quanto si concentra sulla distruzione della natura, e l'impatto dannoso che l'umanità può avere sull'ambiente naturale. Dopo aver studiato alla California School of Design di San Francisco, Gray ha messo le sue competenze per lavorare come illustratore. Nel 1895 si trasferisce a New York, illustrando mentre continua la sua formazione artistica alla Art Students League con William Merritt Chase. Gray sarebbe diventato più conosciuto come un acquerello, anche se a volte ha lavorato in olio, come è il caso in questo dipinto.
