Lucius Q. C. Lamar (1825-1893) è stato un avvocato e professore universitario del Mississippi. Prestò servizio nel Congresso prima della guerra civile, vide il servizio militare come tenente colonnello nell'esercito confederato, e poi tornò al Congresso prima come rappresentante e poi come senatore durante l'era della ricostruzione. Come segretario dell'Interno, Lamar fu tra i primi sudisti a ricevere un Gabinetto dopo la guerra civile, contribuendo così alla riconciliazione nazionale. Ha favorito l'assegnazione delle terre indiane, che alla fine ha rimosso milioni di acri di terra indiana dalla proprietà e dal controllo indiano; il passaggio della legge sulle Dawes nel 1887 avrebbe gravi e durature ramificazioni sulle relazioni indiane.
