Jacob Thompson (1810-1885) servì sei mandati nella Camera dei rappresentanti degli Stati Uniti e presiedette la commissione per gli affari indiani. Nel corso dei suoi anni come segretario dell'Interno, il Dipartimento ha maturato ulteriori responsabilità, tra cui i Boundary Surveys of Texas and California; il Copyright Office; e la giurisdizione su entrambi i Potomac Water Works e ciò che è ora Gallaudet University. Con la secessione del suo stato di casa del Mississippi e lo scoppio della guerra civile, Thompson dimise il suo posto all'interno.
