Van den Anker studiò all'Accademia di Rotterdam prima di trasferirsi in Francia e di stabilirsi a Parigi. Trascorse poi quattordici anni a Pont-Aven, dove dipinse esterni e figure. Qui raffigura una donna di Breton quintessenza della vicina città di Riec-sur-Belon. Marie-Anne Herledan (1815-1889) indossa un copricapo Pont-Aven e abbigliamento tradizionale. Il ritratto è stato commissionato dal figlio del modello, che desiderava onorare sua madre con questo ritratto formale in un bel telaio dorato. Questa tela illustra il talento dell’artista e il suo legame con la tradizione realista dei grandi ritrattisti olandesi del XVII secolo
