Le scene infuocate di Bosch erano molto popolari in tutta Europa nel XVI secolo, ispirando molti imitatori. Un vasto e desolato paesaggio con una città ardente a destra e una pianura ossea a sinistra è l'ambientazione di questa visione notturnamarish in cui Cristo abbatte le porte dell'inferno per salvare le anime dei giusti. Gestire in supplica verso di lui, Adamo ed Eva si inginocchiano sopra una torre rovinata. Dietro di loro, figure della Bibbia ebraica scalano le scale tortuose dalle profondità dell'inferno, tra cui Abramo e Isacco con il montone sacrificale e Noè con un modello dell'arca.
