Butler è accreditato come il fondatore della American Fine Arts Society. Nato a New York City, era un primo sostenitore per la ricreazione e la bellezza della città. Butler convinse Andrew Carnegie a finanziare la costruzione di un lago artificiale ricreativo vicino alla Princeton University. Originariamente un avvocato di brevetto, Butler ha rinunciato a questa pratica per perseguire la pittura nel 1884.
