Durante tutta la sua carriera Ramsay spesso si è usato come modello - ci sono infatti venti autoritratti di petrolio registrati. Questo dipinto è, tuttavia, considerato essere il suo più compiuto. In questo autoritratto di tre quarti, full-frontal, l'artista, indossando una giacca bianca a bottoni alti, sta con la mano sinistra sul fianco e nella sua mano destra abbassata tiene una spazzola.
