King Hobgoblin Dormire è stato progettato a Parigi. A volte, in mezzo alla vivace scena artistica della città, Hugo Simberg si ritirò nel suo mondo, facendo immagini di morte, spiriti boschivi e fiabe. In questo dipinto il re è stanco, e così sono gli altri hobgoblins. Hanno dormito a lungo, come il ragno ha ovviamente girato la sua rete per parecchio tempo. Tuttavia, è presto il momento di svegliarsi, e alcuni stanno già aprendo i loro occhi. Ma può anche essere che il re è morto. Forse il ragno, come spesso nel folklore, è un simbolo di morte. E sull'osservazione più stretta, anche il sonno delle altre hobgoblins sembra innaturale, come sono stati propped up con stampelle. Tutte le interpretazioni sono ugualmente possibili, dal momento che il dipinto non si basa su alcuna fiaba nota, storia o mito.
