In questa rappresentazione strettamente osservata e simpatica di un uomo anziano, viene data particolare attenzione a come i modelli leggeri il volto rugoso del soggetto, la faccia a pelo. Questo realismo oggettivo è caratteristico dei dipinti di Hugo van der Goes, soprattutto dei primi anni 1470.
