Arnold Schönberg visitò il fotografo Hugo Erfurth durante il suo tour di Pierrot nel 1912. Schönberg sembra essere stato ansioso di ottenere i ritratti di se stesso in quel momento; mentre ancora a Berlino è andato allo studio di Karl Schenker, ma non era molto soddisfatto del risultato. Era più felice con le fotografie di Hugo Erfurth. Erfurth stava sperimentando intensamente con l'esposizione di negativi all'epoca; le stampe bicromate di gomma sopravvissute dei ritratti di Schönberg erano il risultato di un processo sofisticato che ha permesso un controllo preciso dei valori tonali. Allo stesso tempo, ha ritenuto importante non fotografare la sitter in una posa artificiale - piuttosto, produrre un'immagine di carattere autentico.
