Sodoma ha dipinto questo potente, recentemente riscoperto Santa Famiglia durante i suoi ultimi anni a Siena, quando si sforzava di creare composizioni che erano subito scultoree e atmosferiche. Non sappiamo perché le figure periferiche siano rimaste incomplete, ma è probabile che un collezionista abbia apprezzato il lavoro nel suo stato attuale, attratto dalle caratteristiche gentili della Vergine e dal vasto paesaggio panoramico. Successivamente il dipinto faceva parte di una delle collezioni più importanti della Spagna.
