Poussin ha creato due interpretazioni di questo tema, The Rape of the Sabine Women and The Abduction of the Sabine Women. Entrambi i dipinti raccontano la leggendaria storia degli uomini di Roma acquisendo mogli per se stessi rapendo loro dai loro vicini Sabine. Mentre la storia va, poco dopo la fondazione di Roma, c'erano pochissime donne, così Romulus tenne un festival, invitando i membri delle città vicine. Al festival, al segnale di Romulo, gli uomini romani rapirono le donne a prenderle per le loro mogli. In questo contesto, la parola “rape” è più strettamente legata alla “abduzione”, come nell’atto di prendere le donne, piuttosto che aggredirle sessualmente. Questo tema è stato rivisitato durante l'antichità in dipinti, sculture e letteratura. Il lavoro di Poussin ora si svolge nel Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York.
