Dipinta intorno al 1600 da Ippolito Scarsella noto come Scarsellino, la tela decorò originariamente il coro nella chiesa di Santa Margherita. Il santo patrono è raffigurato insieme a San Chiara e San Francesco che adorano la famosa Madonna di Reggio, un culto portato a Ferrara da Margherita Gonzaga, l'ultima duchessa, e che rimase attiva anche dopo la sua morte e nella Devoluzione (1598).
