ISHIKAWA Kangan ha studiato Nanga* tradizionale sotto KOMURO Suiun. Ha poi stabilito il suo stile originale, prendendo ispirazione dalla pittura occidentale e dal ricco ambiente naturale della sua città natale. Il suo approccio ha tratto anche dalla tecnica mōrōtai o hazy-style utilizzata da YOKOYAMA Taikan tra gli altri artisti che, come Ishikawa, hanno guardato all'arte occidentale. In questo pezzo, una morbidezza distinta avvolge il pastore e le montagne, qualcosa non comunemente visto nell’opera di altri pittori. Nonostante le grandi aspettative per il suo futuro, Ishikawa è morto a 46 anni.
