Barnyard fowl di ogni varietà erano tra i soggetti preferiti di Jakuchū. Qui, il roostro eroico dirige il suo sguardo piercing verso l'alto mentre sta in piedi su un piede, sollevando la sua coda fiammeggiante; una gallina, in attesa di lui a corvo, ammira la sua figura galante. Jakuchū, che dedicò tutta la sua vita esclusivamente alla pittura, era conosciuto come uno dei “Three Eccentrics” (san kijin) di Kyoto del XVIII secolo. Egli e i suoi compagni Eccentrics, Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754–1799) e Soga Shōhaku (1730–1781), erano anche conosciuti per la loro vita sociale fiammeggiante.
