Aivazovsky è stato un famoso pittore di paesaggi marini. Preferiva raffigurare navi da vela, ma a volte ritrasse navi a vapore moderne come questa. L'affinità dell'artista per l'oceano ha cominciato nel suo luogo di nascita, il porto del Mar Nero di Feodosia (Theodosia) in Crimea, poi parte dell'Impero russo e ora in Ucraina. Come membro della comunità armena di lunga data della città, Aivazovsky aveva un ricco background culturale e linguistico. Ha lavorato e esposto ampiamente, anche nelle città dell'attuale Armenia, Georgia, Italia, Russia, Turchia e Ucraina continentale, ma è rimasto radicato in Feodosia (Theodosia). Il museo che aprì in città nel 1880 fu la terza galleria d'arte pubblica dell'Impero russo.
