Turner dipinse spesso sul Monte Rigi, un miglio alto sulle Alpi svizzere che è visibile dal Lago di Lucerna, negli anni tra il 1841 e il 1844, ma questa vista dalla cima della montagna è rara. Infatti, Turner ha prodotto questo lavoro nel suo studio basato su fonti secondarie per il suo cliente Francis McCracken, ma il dipinto à ̈ stato respinto, possibilmente perché McCracken era a disagio con il tardo stile dell'artista. Anche parte della Turner Bequest nel 1856, il dipinto non fu più visto fino al 1974-75, quando fu esposto alla Royal Academy di Londra in uno spettacolo per segnare il bicentenario della nascita dell'artista.
